Program Level: Basic
Credits: 1 CPE | 1 CE
Advanced Preparation: None
Prerequisite: None

This program will examine key residency concepts and audit issues affecting “snowbirds,” remote workers, and individuals moving into or out of the DMV and New York tristate areas. The presentation will cover domicile, statutory residency, day-count rules, source income, telework issues, and practical documentation strategies. The program will also compare common approaches taken by jurisdictions such as New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, with a focus on identifying risk areas and advising clients before, during, and after a residency audit.
Agenda
  • Identify common residency audit triggers for snowbirds, remote workers, and taxpayers who move between states.
  • Distinguish between domicile and statutory residency concepts and apply those concepts to common multistate fact patterns.
  • Recognize key differences in residency and income-sourcing rules across the DMV and New York tristate jurisdictions.
  • Evaluate the tax risks associated with remote work, temporary relocation, and partial-year moves.
  • Advise clients on practical recordkeeping, documentation, and planning steps to reduce residency audit exposure.
